Digital marketing kya hai? A simple guide for shop owners
By Darshana Patel8 min read
Short answer: Digital marketing ka matlab hai internet ke through customers lana. In plain words: digital marketing is getting customers through Google, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and your own website instead of, or in addition to, a signboard, pamphlets, and word of mouth. For a small business in India it mostly means six things, and the two most important ones are free.
"Digital marketing kya hai?" is one of the most searched questions in India, and most answers are written for students who want a job in it, not for an owner who wants more customers. This guide is for the owner. It explains what digital marketing is, the six types that matter for a shop, clinic, or service, what each one costs, where to start, and the myths that waste money.
Digital marketing kya hai? (What is digital marketing?)
Think about how a customer found you ten years ago: they walked past, a friend told them, or they saw a pamphlet. Now think about how they find you today: they type "salon near me" into Google, they see a reel on Instagram, a friend forwards your WhatsApp catalogue, or they look you up on Google Maps to check the timings and reviews before coming.
Digital marketing is being present, clearly and honestly, in all those places where customers already look. That is all. It is not a trick and not a technology. It is the online version of a clean board, a good location, and a friendly reply.
The six types that matter for a small business
| Type | What it is, in plain words | Cost in India | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile (Google Maps) | Your free listing on Google Maps with photos, timings, reviews, and a call button | Free | Every business with a location or a service area |
| Website | Your own page on the internet that shows what you do and lets people contact you | ₹10,000 – ₹40,000 one-time | Any business people look up before buying |
| SEO (search engine optimisation) | Work that makes your website and profile show higher on Google without ads | ₹10,000 – ₹20,000 one-time; ₹8,000+ a month if ongoing | Services people search for: doctors, repairs, coaching, agencies |
| Google Ads | Paying to appear at the top of Google when someone searches for what you sell | ₹9,000 – ₹15,000 a month budget + fee | Anything people already search for |
| Instagram and Facebook ads | Paying to show your photos or videos to people in your area who match your customers | ₹3,000 – ₹15,000 a month budget + fee | Food, fashion, salons, decor, events, anything visual |
| WhatsApp marketing | Using WhatsApp Business to answer, take orders, send reminders, and share offers | Free app; API ₹1,500 – ₹4,000 a month | Every business; especially repeat customers |
Email marketing, YouTube, and influencer marketing are also digital marketing, but for a small Indian business they come after these six.
Where to start (in this order)
Owners often start with the most expensive thing (ads) and skip the free things. Do it in this order instead:
1. Google Business Profile (free, one afternoon)
When someone nearby searches for what you sell, Google shows a map with three businesses. Being one of them is free. Set up your profile, add photos, list your services, and ask happy customers for reviews. Our guide to getting your shop on Google Maps walks through it step by step, and the local SEO guide shows how to rise to the top three.
2. WhatsApp Business (free, one hour)
Move your business chats to the free WhatsApp Business app. Add a catalogue, a welcome message, an away message, and quick replies to the questions you answer ten times a day. Put a "Message us on WhatsApp" link on your Google profile and Instagram. Our post on WhatsApp Business API pricing explains when the paid version becomes worth it.
3. A simple website (₹10,000 – ₹40,000, two weeks)
People check whether you are real before they visit or pay. A clean one- to six-page website with your services, photos, location, and a WhatsApp button does that job. It also gives Google and AI tools something to read about you. See website development cost in India for what to expect and what to avoid.
4. Instagram, if your product is visual (free, ongoing)
Food, cakes, clothes, jewellery, salons, interiors, events: people decide with their eyes. Post real photos and short videos three or four times a week. You do not need to go viral; you need the people in your area who follow you to remember you.
5. Ads, when the basics are done (₹5,000 – ₹15,000 a month)
Once the profile, WhatsApp, and website are ready, ads bring enquiries fast. Google Ads if people search for what you sell; Instagram ads if they discover it by seeing it. Our guides on Google Ads cost in India and Google Ads or Instagram ads explain the choice and the budget.
6. SEO and AI search, to keep growing without ads
With the basics live, ongoing SEO adds pages that answer customer questions, so you appear for more searches each month and get named in AI answers from ChatGPT and Google. Read SEO packages and pricing in India and what GEO is.
Digital marketing ka kharcha (what it costs)
Realistic budgets for a small business in India in 2026:
| Stage | One-time | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Just starting (profile + WhatsApp, done yourself) | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| Set up properly by someone (profile + WhatsApp basics + simple website) | ₹15,000 – ₹30,000 | ₹0 – ₹3,000 |
| Growing (above + ads) | as above | ₹10,000 – ₹25,000 including ad budget |
| Serious (above + ongoing SEO and profile care) | as above | ₹20,000 – ₹40,000 |
The point is not to spend more. It is to spend in the right order and stop what does not bring customers.
Karein khud ya agency? (Do it yourself or hire?)
Do it yourself if you or someone in your team enjoys phones and photos, you have two to three hours a week, and your budget is tight. The free parts above are genuinely doable.
Hire help if you would rather spend those hours on your business, you want ads set up correctly the first time, or you have tried and the results were confusing. Whoever you hire, keep the Google profile, website, ad accounts, and WhatsApp number in your own name. If you want to see what hiring looks like with fixed prices, our services are listed with what each one includes.
Be careful of anyone who promises "guaranteed number one on Google", "10,000 followers in a month", or results in a week. Nobody can promise these honestly.
Five myths that waste money
- "I need to go viral." No. You need the 5,000 people within 5 km of you to find and trust you.
- "Digital marketing is only for big companies." The map results and WhatsApp favour the small local business that answers fast.
- "I need a big budget." The two most powerful tools are free. Ads come later, in small amounts.
- "Results come overnight." Ads take a couple of weeks to settle, SEO takes months, and reviews build over a year. Judge over months, not days.
- "A website is enough." A website nobody can find does nothing. Profile, reviews, and WhatsApp make it work.

| PPC / Google Ads | Paying per click to appear at the top of Google search |

| Lead / enquiry | Someone who called, messaged, or filled a form because of your marketing |
| Conversion | When a visitor does what you wanted: calls, messages, orders, books |
| Landing page | The page a person reaches after clicking your ad; it should match the ad |
| Impression | One time your ad, post, or listing was shown to someone |
| CTR | Click-through rate: what percentage of people who saw it clicked it |

| Boost post | Instagram or Facebook's one-tap ad button; simple, but less control than a proper ad |

Common questions
Digital marketing kitne prakar ki hoti hai? (What are the types?)
For a small business there are six that matter: Google Business Profile (Maps), a website, search engine optimisation (SEO), paid ads on Google, paid ads on Instagram and Facebook, and WhatsApp marketing. Email, YouTube, and influencer marketing exist too, but they come later.
Kya digital marketing free mein ho sakti hai? (Can it be done for free?)
The most important parts are free: a Google Business Profile, a WhatsApp Business account, Instagram, and posting regularly. What costs money is a website, ads, and someone’s time. Many shops get their first online customers without spending a rupee.
Small business ke liye digital marketing ka kharcha kitna hai? (How much does it cost?)
A realistic starting budget in India is ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 one-time for a Google profile and a simple website, and ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 a month if you run ads. You can start with the free parts and add paid parts as they prove themselves.
Small business ke liye sabse best digital marketing kaun si hai? (Which is best?)
For a local shop, clinic, or service, Google Business Profile plus WhatsApp is the best start, because people already search "near me" and already use WhatsApp. For products people buy by seeing (food, fashion, decor), Instagram comes next. Ads come after the free basics are done.
Kya mujhe digital marketing seekhni padegi? (Do I have to learn it?)
No. You need to understand it enough to make decisions and to know whether someone is doing a good job for you. This guide is enough for that. The daily work can be done by you, a staff member, or an agency.
