Digital marketing strategy for small business in India
By Darshana Patel10 min read
Short answer: A digital marketing strategy for a small business fits on one page. It answers who your customer is and what they type into Google, where they look, what your foundation is (Google Business Profile, WhatsApp Business, a simple website), which growth engines you will run (reviews, content, ads), what you will do every week, and which five numbers you will watch. Expect ₹15,000 to ₹35,000 one-time and ₹3,000 to ₹20,000 a month, and give it 90 days before judging.
Most "digital marketing strategy for small business" guides are written for marketing managers with a team. You are the owner, the receptionist, and the marketing department. This post gives you a strategy you can write down in an hour, keep next to the billing counter, and follow in two or three hours a week. It has seven steps, a fill-in-the-blanks template, a weekly rhythm with time estimates, the numbers to watch, a 90-day plan, and short examples for a clinic, a cafe, and a coaching class. If the words are new to you, our plain guide to what digital marketing is explains each one.
Step 1: Who is the customer, and what do they type into Google?
Write down your two or three main customer types and the exact words they type: not what you call your service, what they call it.
| Business | Customer | What they type |
|---|---|---|
| Dental clinic | A parent with a child's toothache; a working adult wanting whitening | "dentist near me", "child dentist [area]", "teeth whitening cost [city]" |
| Cafe | A college group; a couple looking for a weekend spot | "cafe near me", "best coffee [area]", "cafe with wifi [city]" |
| Coaching class | A parent of a Class 10 student; a graduate preparing for a bank exam | "maths tuition [area]", "bank exam coaching [city]", "coaching classes near me" |
Ask your last ten customers what they searched. Their words go into the plan, not yours.
Step 2: Where do they look?
You do not need every channel. You need the two your customers use most.
| Channel | When it matters most | What "being present" means |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps and "near me" search | Anything people need nearby: clinics, shops, classes, repairs, food | A complete Google Business Profile with photos, hours, services, and recent reviews |
| Google search (website) | Anything people research before deciding: fees, treatments, courses, prices | A simple website with one page per service and your city on every page |
| Anything people choose by seeing: food, fashion, salons, decor, fitness | Real photos and short videos three or four times a week | |
| Every business; it is where the enquiry actually happens | WhatsApp Business with a catalogue, quick replies, and a reply within minutes |
Tick two, at most three. YouTube, email, and influencers can wait.
Step 3: The foundation
Three things come before anything else. Together they typically cost ₹15,000 to ₹35,000 if set up for you, and much less if you do the first two yourself.
- Google Business Profile. Claim it, verify it, pick the right category, list every service, add 15 or more real photos, set your hours, and add your WhatsApp link. The local SEO guide explains how to climb into the top three on the map.
- WhatsApp Business. The free app, with a welcome message, an away message, quick replies for your ten most common questions, and a catalogue of services with prices. Put the click-to-chat link on your profile, website, and Instagram.
- A simple website. One to six pages: what you do, who you are, prices or price ranges, photos, location, and call and WhatsApp buttons. It is what people check before they trust you.
Step 4: The growth engines
Once the foundation is live, three engines bring new customers.
- Reviews. Ask every happy customer, the same day, with a link or QR code. Reply to every review, good or bad, within a day. In our experience nothing else moves map ranking and trust as much.
- Content. One useful answer a month on your website ("How much does a root canal cost?") and a few posts a week on your Google profile or Instagram. Slow, but it keeps working without ad spend.
- Ads. A small Google Ads budget if people search for what you sell, or Instagram ads if they discover it by seeing. Start at ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 a month, one campaign, one area, and measure the cost per enquiry. Our post on what lead generation is explains how an enquiry becomes a customer.
Step 5: The monthly rhythm
This is the part most plans skip, and the part that decides whether the plan works.
| Task | How often | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reply to WhatsApp and calls | Daily, within minutes | Ongoing | Speed of reply matters more than any ad |
| Ask happy customers for a review | Daily | 1 minute each | Have the QR code at the counter |
| Reply to new reviews | Twice a week | 10 minutes | Thank by name; answer complaints calmly |
| Post on Google Business Profile | Weekly | 15 minutes | An offer, a photo, a tip |
| Post on Instagram (if it is your channel) | 3 – 4 times a week | 20 minutes each | Real photos beat designed graphics |
| Check ad spend and enquiries | Weekly | 15 minutes | Pause what is not bringing enquiries |
| Publish one useful article or page | Monthly | 2 hours, or outsourced | Answer one real customer question |
| Fill in the numbers sheet | Monthly | 30 minutes | See Step 6 |
Total: roughly two to three hours a week plus the replying. If you cannot find those hours, that is the first thing to hire out, not the ads.
Step 6: The numbers to watch
Ignore likes and followers. Watch the numbers that turn into money.
| Number | Where to find it | What you want to see |
|---|---|---|
| Calls from Google | Google Business Profile insights | Rising month on month |
| WhatsApp messages | WhatsApp Business, or your own count | Rising, and answered within minutes |
| Direction requests | Google Business Profile insights | Rising, especially on weekends if you are a shop or cafe |
| Enquiries by source | Your own sheet: "where did you see us?" | Which source brings the most, and which brings the best |
| Cost per enquiry (ads) | Ad spend ÷ enquiries from ads | Falling, and below what an enquiry is worth to you |
Write these five numbers down on the last day of each month. Our post on digital marketing cost in India shows how to turn "what is a customer worth" into a budget.
Step 7: The 90-day plan
| Month | Focus | What gets done | Typical cost (at the time of writing) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Month 1: Foundation | Be findable and reachable | Google Business Profile complete and verified; WhatsApp Business set up; website live; review QR at the counter; numbers sheet started | ₹15,000 – ₹35,000 one-time if done for you; near zero if you do the profile and WhatsApp yourself |
| Month 2: Reviews and an ads test | Build trust, test demand | Ask every customer for a review; reply to all; launch one small ad campaign in one area; track cost per enquiry weekly | ₹5,000 – ₹10,000 ad budget, plus ₹5,000 – ₹9,000 if managed for you |
| Month 3: Content and scale | Grow what works | First article published; weekly profile posts; scale the ad that brings cheap enquiries, pause the rest; review the five numbers | ₹5,000 – ₹20,000 a month, depending on what you keep |
At the end of month three, keep what brought enquiries, drop what did not, and set the next 90 days.

Three short examples
A dental clinic. Customers search "dentist near me" and "root canal cost". Channels: Google Maps and the website. Foundation: profile with every treatment listed, WhatsApp for appointments, a six-page site with a price-range page. Engines: a review request after every visit, one article a month on a treatment cost, a small Google Ads campaign for two high-value treatments. Numbers: calls, WhatsApp bookings, cost per booked appointment.
A cafe. Customers search "cafe near me" and discover places on Instagram. Channels: Google Maps and Instagram. Foundation: profile with menu photos and correct weekend hours, WhatsApp for bookings and orders, a one-page site with the menu. Engines: a review QR on every table, three real posts a week, a weekend Instagram ad within 5 km for a new item. Numbers: direction requests, WhatsApp orders, weekend footfall.
A coaching class. Parents search "maths tuition [area]" and ask other parents on WhatsApp. Channels: Google search and WhatsApp. Foundation: profile with batches and timings, WhatsApp quick replies for fees and timings, a site with one page per course. Engines: reviews from parents at result time, one article a month on exam preparation, Google Ads in admission season only. Numbers: enquiries by course, demo bookings, cost per admission enquiry.

The short version
A digital marketing strategy for a small business is one page: who your customer is and what they type, the two channels they use, a foundation of Google Business Profile, WhatsApp Business, and a simple website, then reviews, content, and a small ads test. Spend two to three hours a week on the rhythm, track five numbers monthly, and follow the 90-day plan: foundation, then reviews and an ads test, then content and scale. Expect ₹15,000 to ₹35,000 one-time and ₹3,000 to ₹20,000 a month, and judge it by enquiries, not likes.
Common questions
What is the best digital marketing strategy for a small business?
For most small businesses in India, the best strategy is local: a complete Google Business Profile, WhatsApp Business for replies, a simple website, steady reviews, and a small ad budget tested once the basics are done. It works because customers already search "near me" and already use WhatsApp.
How do I write a marketing plan for my small business?
Answer seven questions on one page: who the customer is, what they type into Google, where they look, what your foundation is, which growth engines you will use, what you will do each week, and which numbers you will watch. Then follow a 90-day plan and review the numbers monthly.
How much should a small business spend on digital marketing?
At the time of writing, a realistic setup is ₹15,000 to ₹35,000 one-time and ₹3,000 to ₹20,000 a month. Start from what one customer is worth to you and what you can afford to pay per enquiry, rather than from an agency price list.
How long does a digital marketing strategy take to show results?
Google Maps changes show within weeks, ads bring enquiries within days of launching but need two to four weeks to settle, and SEO content takes three to six months. Judge the plan at 90 days using calls, WhatsApp messages, and enquiries, not likes.
Do I need Instagram for my small business?
Only if your customers decide by seeing: food, fashion, salons, decor, events, fitness. A clinic, a tuition class, or a repair service will get far more from Google Maps and WhatsApp. Pick the two channels your customers actually use and ignore the rest.
