Google Ads or Instagram ads: which one for a small business?
By Darshana PatelUpdated 8 min read
Short answer: Choose Google Ads if people search for what you sell when they need it (doctors, repairs, tuition, lawyers). Choose Instagram and Facebook ads if people discover what you sell by seeing it (food, clothes, salons, gifts). In India, Instagram clicks are usually cheaper, but Google clicks more often turn into customers the same day. Start one platform at ₹300 to ₹500 a day for a month, measure the cost per enquiry, then add the other.
Many small business owners ask us the same question: "Should I spend my money on Google or on Instagram?"
The honest answer is that it depends on how your customers decide to buy. This guide gives you a simple way to choose, shows what each platform typically costs in India, and lists what to fix before you spend a rupee.
The one difference that matters
Google Ads reach people who are already searching. Someone types "AC repair near me". They have a problem right now. Your ad appears, they call you.
Instagram and Facebook ads (Meta Ads) reach people who are scrolling. They were not looking for you. They see your cake, your kurta, or your festival offer, and they become interested.
So the question becomes: do people search for what you sell, or do they discover it?
When Google Ads work best
Choose Google Ads when customers have an urgent or clear need:
- Doctors, dentists, and clinics
- Plumbers, electricians, AC and appliance repair
- Lawyers, CAs, and consultants
- Coaching classes and tuition
- Packers and movers, car rental, pest control
With Google Ads you pay only when someone clicks. Clicks cost more than on Instagram, but the person clicking is often ready to buy today. Our post on Google Ads cost in India has the typical click prices by industry.
When Instagram and Facebook ads work best
Choose Meta Ads when your product looks good and people buy on impulse or for occasions:
- Bakeries, cafes, and restaurants
- Clothing, jewellery, and gift shops
- Salons, makeup artists, and mehndi artists
- Gyms, yoga, and dance classes
- Home decor and handmade products
These ads cost less per click, and you can show them only to people within a few kilometres of your shop. They work best with good photos or short videos and a clear offer. Our Instagram ads cost guide shows what a month typically costs and what a good result looks like.
Google Ads vs Instagram ads, side by side
| Google Ads | Instagram and Facebook ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees it | People searching for your service right now | People nearby scrolling, who were not looking for you |
| Typical cost per click in India (at the time of writing) | ₹10 to ₹80, higher for legal, finance and medical | ₹3 to ₹20 |
| What you need to run it | A few clear lines of text and a phone number or website | Good photos or short videos and an offer |
| How fast enquiries come | Often the same day the ad goes live | Usually a few days, as the ad finds the right people |
| Best goal to set | Calls and WhatsApp messages | WhatsApp messages, lead forms, shop visits |
| Where it falls flat | Products nobody searches for | Urgent services with no visual appeal |
The numbers in the table are broad ranges. Your own city, competition and ad quality move them a lot, which is why the first month is for learning, not judging.
What about the "Boost post" button?
Boosting is the simplest form of Instagram advertising, and it is where most owners lose money. A boosted post usually collects likes, not customers.
A proper campaign is different. You choose a goal, such as messages on WhatsApp, select the right area and age group, and test two or three different ads. The budget is the same, but the results are usually much better.
How much money do you need to start?
Most small businesses can start with ₹300 to ₹500 per day on one platform. Run it for at least three to four weeks before judging. The first two weeks are for learning what works.
You pay this budget directly to Google or Meta. If someone manages the ads for you, their fee is separate. Always keep the ad account in your own name.
A simple way to set the budget: work out what one new customer is worth to you. A dentist whose average patient spends ₹4,000 can afford to pay ₹400 to ₹800 per enquiry. A bakery whose average order is ₹600 cannot, so it needs the cheaper Instagram clicks and an offer that brings people back.
A simple way to decide
Ask yourself these three questions:
- Do people search for my service when they need it? If yes, start with Google Ads.
- Does my product look attractive in a photo or video? If yes, start with Instagram ads.
- Is my answer yes to both? Start with the one that matches your main income, then add the second after a month or two.
Three examples from the businesses we talk to most:
- A clinic starts with Google Ads for "dentist near me" and its main treatments, and adds Instagram later only for a visual service such as teeth whitening.
- A cake shop starts with Instagram ads within 5 km, showing real cakes with a WhatsApp order button, and skips Google Ads unless it is the only bakery in a small town.
- A gym does both: Google Ads for "gym near me" in January and Instagram ads for a joining offer the rest of the year.
Mistakes that waste the first month
- Sending Google clicks to a home page that does not mention the service searched for. Send them to a page about that service, or straight to WhatsApp.
- Running Instagram ads with a stock photo. A slightly imperfect photo of your real shop, staff or product beats a perfect stock image every time.
- Choosing the wrong goal. "Reach" and "engagement" goals give you views and likes. If you want enquiries, choose a messages, calls or leads goal.
- Targeting the whole city when customers come from three neighbourhoods. Start narrow.
- Stopping after four days because nothing happened. Both systems need a couple of weeks to learn who responds.
- Nobody answering. An enquiry answered in a minute becomes a customer; one answered after three hours usually goes to the competitor. Quick replies on WhatsApp Business help here.
Before you spend anything on ads
Make sure the basics are ready. Ads send people to your business, but they will not convince them alone.
- A complete Google Business Profile with reviews
- A working WhatsApp Business number with quick replies
- A simple website or landing page that explains what you offer
If these are missing, fix them first. They cost far less than a month of wasted ad budget.
What we charge
If you would rather have the ads set up properly the first time, our Google & Meta Ads service has two packages. Ads Setup is ₹7,999 one-time: one campaign built and launched on the platform we agree suits you, with the right goal, area and audience, and a handover so you can watch it yourself. Ads Management is ₹12,999 per month: Google and Meta together, new ads every month, weekly checks, a monthly report in plain words, and WhatsApp support.
The ad budget itself is paid by you directly to Google or Meta, the ad account stays in your name, and prices exclude GST. There is no lock-in on the monthly plan. Everything is listed side by side on the pricing page.
The short version
Google Ads reach people who are searching and are best for services with an urgent, clear need. Instagram and Facebook ads reach people who are scrolling and are best for products and services that look good in a photo. In India, Instagram clicks are cheaper, but Google clicks convert faster. Get your Google profile, WhatsApp and website ready first, start one platform at ₹300 to ₹500 a day for a month, judge by cost per enquiry, and add the second platform only when the first one pays for itself.
Common questions
Which is cheaper, Google Ads or Instagram ads?
Per click, Instagram and Facebook ads are usually cheaper in India. Per customer, Google Ads are often cheaper for services people already search for, because the person is looking for you right now. Judge by cost per enquiry, not cost per click.
Can I run both at the same time?
Yes, and many businesses do once the basics work: Google Ads for people searching, Instagram ads to show offers to people nearby. Start with one, learn for a month, then add the other.
What is the minimum budget to start?
Both platforms let you start at about ₹100 a day. In practice, ₹300 to ₹500 a day for at least a month is needed to learn what works. The ad budget is paid directly to Google or Meta.
Is the Instagram Boost button the same as running ads?
Boost is a simplified ad with fewer targeting and goal options. It is fine for a quick offer. For enquiries, use Meta Ads Manager with a WhatsApp or lead goal; it costs the same and gives far more control.
How long before I know if the ads are working?
Give one platform three to four weeks with a steady daily budget. The first two weeks teach the system who responds; judge the last two by enquiries received, not by clicks or likes. If the cost per enquiry is more than you earn from a customer, change the ad or the platform.
