Digital marketing for hotels in India: more direct bookings

By 10 min read

Short answer: Digital marketing for hotels in India comes down to six channels, in this order: a complete Google Business Profile, a fast website with rooms, rates and a WhatsApp button, review management, Instagram for resorts, WhatsApp for enquiries and repeat guests, and Google Ads on your own name and "hotels in [area]". The goal is direct bookings, because booking portals typically keep mid-teens to low-twenties percent of every booking at the time of writing. The first three channels cost only time; ads typically start at ₹300 to ₹1,500 a day.

If you run a small hotel, a resort, a homestay or a guest house, the portals probably bring most of your bookings, and most of your frustration. This guide covers digital marketing for hotels from the owner's side: why direct bookings matter, the six channels and what each costs, seasonal planning, what the website needs, how to measure, what agencies charge, and a 30-day plan.

The OTA reality and why direct bookings matter

Online travel agencies such as MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, Booking.com and Agoda are where most Indian travellers start, and you should stay on them. But every booking costs a commission, typically 15 to 22 percent of the room rate at the time of writing, and the portal keeps the guest's email and phone, so a returning guest costs you the commission again.

A direct booking keeps the full rate and the guest. Moving even 20 room-nights a month at ₹3,000 from portals to direct saves roughly ₹9,000 to ₹13,000 a month. The pattern is: portals for discovery, your own channels for the second look and every repeat stay.

The six channels, in order

1. Google Business Profile

When a traveller searches "hotels in [area]" or "resort near [place]", Google shows a map and a hotel panel with photos, rating, price and a booking section. Your free listing needs the correct hotel category, check-in and check-out times, amenities, 20 or more real photos of rooms, bathrooms, food and the view, and your website link. Google also shows booking links on hotel listings; if you use a booking engine or channel manager that connects to Google, ask them to enable the free direct link so your own rate appears next to the portals. Our Google Business Profile service can set it up and keep it active.

2. A fast website with rooms, rates and WhatsApp

Most guests look you up on a phone after seeing you on a portal. The site must load in a few seconds on mobile data and answer four questions: what do the rooms look like, what do they cost, where is it, and how do I book. A WhatsApp button and a short enquiry form (dates, guests, room type) on every page are enough for most small hotels. A booking engine, which lets guests pick dates and pay online, typically costs ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 a month at the time of writing, with some charging a small percentage per booking instead; add it once direct enquiries are steady.

3. Reviews management

Guests read the last ten reviews before your description. Ask at check-out with a review link or QR at reception and a WhatsApp message after departure, reply to every Google and portal review within a day, and fix whatever the bad ones repeat. Our guide on how to get Google reviews has the exact messages to send and what Google forbids.

4. Instagram and reels for resorts

For a business hotel Instagram is optional. For a resort, homestay or hill or beach property it is the main discovery channel after Google. Post short reels of the view, the pool, the food and the road in, tag the location, and keep the WhatsApp link in the bio. Two or three phone reels a week beat one polished video a month.

5. WhatsApp for enquiries, repeat guests and check-in

Most direct enquiries in India come on WhatsApp. Reply within an hour with rates, photos and a payment link, label the guest (Enquiry, Booked, Stayed), send check-in details the day before arrival, and message past guests before long weekends and festivals with an offer. It is the cheapest repeat-booking channel a hotel has.

6. Google Ads on your own name and "hotels in [area]"

Two campaigns are enough. The first is on your own hotel name, because portals bid on it and take your guest for a commission; these clicks are usually ₹5 to ₹20 at the time of writing. The second is on "hotels in [area]" or "resorts near [place]", where clicks typically cost ₹15 to ₹80. A budget of ₹300 to ₹1,500 a day covers both for a small property. Send the click to the rooms page, not the home page. Our post on Google Ads cost in India explains what moves the click price.

Channel Typical cost at the time of writing Effort What it brings
Google Business Profile Free Two hours to set up, an hour a week Calls, direction requests, direct bookings from the map
Website with rates and WhatsApp ₹10,000 – ₹35,000 one-time; booking engine ₹1,000 – ₹5,000 a month optional Low after launch Trust, the second look, direct enquiries
Reviews management Free Ten minutes a day Higher rank on Maps and portals, more bookings
Instagram and reels Free; ₹2,000 – ₹10,000 a month if boosted Two or three reels a week Discovery for resorts, weekend and wedding enquiries
WhatsApp Free app; API tools ₹1,000 – ₹3,000 a month Reply within an hour Enquiries converted, repeat guests
Google Ads ₹300 – ₹1,500 a day budget Weekly checks Guests searching your name and your area

Seasonal planning

Marketing should follow demand:

  • Weekends and long weekends. Mark every long weekend of the year. Post offers and WhatsApp past guests two to three weeks before.
  • Festivals and school holidays. Diwali, Christmas to New Year, Holi, summer holidays. Raise rates on portals and hold a direct-only extra such as breakfast or late check-out.
  • Wedding season for resorts. Build a "weddings and events" page with capacity, lawn photos and an enquiry form well before the season starts in your region.
  • Off-season. Ads on your area are cheapest, and reviews, photos and website fixes get done.

What the hotel website needs

Picture a 20-room resort's site. The home page opens with one wide photo, the location line ("hill resort 40 km from [city]"), a "rates from" figure and two buttons: WhatsApp and Check availability. Below are three room types with prices, guest reviews, the pool and restaurant, and a map with "How to reach".

The pages a small hotel needs:

  1. Home with the offer of the month and the two buttons.
  2. Rooms, one section per type, with "rates from", occupancy, real photos and what is included.
  3. Amenities and dining.
  4. Gallery, sorted by rooms, property, food and view.
  5. Location and how to reach, with distances and a map.
  6. Offers, dated, so they are never stale.
  7. Contact and WhatsApp, plus the enquiry form.
  8. Policies: check-in and check-out times, cancellation, ID rules, children and extra beds.

Rate parity in one line: keep your direct price at least as good as the portal price, or the guest who found you directly still books on the portal.

How to measure hotel marketing

Count five things every month: direct enquiries by form and phone, WhatsApp bookings, calls and direction requests on the Google Business Profile (the dashboard shows both), and the share of room-nights that came direct versus from portals. If the direct share rises a few points a quarter, the marketing is paying for itself.

What hotel marketing agencies charge

At the time of writing, agencies that serve small hotels typically charge ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 a month for a basic package of Google profile care, review replies and social posting, and ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 or more a month for ads management, social media and search work together. Ad budget is always separate. Hotel website builds usually run ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 depending on pages and whether a booking engine is connected. Ask any agency what they count as a result; if it is followers or impressions rather than enquiries and direct bookings, keep looking.

Mistakes hotels make online

  1. Using the portal's photos only, or none at all, on the Google profile and website.
  2. No rates on the website, so the guest goes back to the portal to see the price and books there.
  3. Ignoring reviews, especially the bad ones, which stay unanswered on the profile for years.
  4. No WhatsApp reply within an hour; the guest has booked elsewhere by evening.
  5. Direct price higher than the portal price.
  6. A slow website that never loads on a hill-station signal.

A 30-day plan

  • Days 1 to 5: claim and complete the Google Business Profile with category, timings, amenities and 20 photos. Set up WhatsApp Business with a welcome message, quick replies and labels.
  • Days 6 to 12: build or fix the website: rooms with rates from, gallery, location, policies, WhatsApp on every page. Match the direct rate to the portals.
  • Days 13 to 18: put a review link and QR at reception and start the check-out ask. Reply to every existing review.
  • Days 19 to 24: launch the Google Ads campaign on your own name and one on "hotels in [area]" at ₹300 to ₹500 a day.
  • Days 25 to 30: for a resort, post six reels. Message past guests about the next long weekend. Count direct enquiries, WhatsApp bookings and profile calls.

The short version

Digital marketing for hotels in India is about turning portal discovery into direct bookings. Complete the Google Business Profile, put rates and a WhatsApp button on a fast website, collect and answer reviews, post reels if you are a resort, reply on WhatsApp within an hour, and run Google Ads on your own name before spending on your area. Keep the direct rate at least as good as the portal rate, plan around long weekends and festivals, and measure direct enquiries and portal share monthly. Portals typically keep 15 to 22 percent of every booking; every direct booking is that money back.

Common questions

Why do direct bookings matter if MakeMyTrip and Booking.com already fill my rooms?

Because every portal booking costs a commission, typically in the mid-teens to low-twenties percent of the room rate at the time of writing, and the guest’s details stay with the portal. A direct booking through your Google profile, website or WhatsApp keeps the full rate and the guest, who can then be invited back without paying commission again.

What should a small hotel website have?

Rooms with "rates from" prices, real photos, amenities, a gallery, location with how to reach, current offers, policies such as check-in time and cancellation, and a WhatsApp button or booking form on every page. It must load fast on mobile data, because most guests look you up on a phone after seeing you on a portal.

How much does digital marketing for a hotel cost in India?

A do-it-yourself start costs only time: Google Business Profile, WhatsApp and reviews are free. Google Ads on your own name and "hotels in [area]" typically needs ₹300 to ₹1,500 a day. Agencies usually charge ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 a month for a basic package and ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 or more for ads, social and SEO together, with ad budget separate.

Should my direct rate be lower than the OTA rate?

At least as good, and ideally a little better or with an extra such as breakfast or late check-out. Most portal contracts ask you to keep rates equal, so check yours, but guests who find your website and see a worse price than the portal will book on the portal and you pay commission for a guest who found you directly.

How do I get more Google reviews for my hotel?

Ask at check-out, when the guest is happiest, with a review link or QR at reception and a WhatsApp message an hour after they leave. Reply to every review, good and bad, within a day. Never offer discounts for reviews or buy them; Google can remove the reviews and penalise the profile.
