How to list your business on Google Maps for free
By Darshana PatelUpdated 4 min read
Short answer: You can list your business on Google for free by creating a Google Business Profile (earlier called Google My Business). It takes about an hour to fill in and a few days for Google to verify, and it puts your shop or service on Google Maps and in "near me" searches at no cost.
When someone nearby searches "tailor near me" or "best dosa in Satellite", Google shows a map with a few businesses. Being on that map is free. You only need a Google Business Profile. This is the same thing people search as "google par apna business kaise dale", and the steps are identical.
This guide explains how to set it up yourself, step by step.
What is a Google Business Profile?
A Google Business Profile is your free business listing on Google Search and Google Maps. It shows your name, location, timings, phone number, photos, and customer reviews. Google does not charge anything for it.
For a local business, this listing often brings more customers than a website does, because people see it at the exact moment they are looking for what you sell.
What you need before you start
- A Google account (a Gmail address)
- Your exact business name, as written on your shop board
- Your address, or the areas you serve if you visit customers
- A phone number customers can call
- A few clear photos of your shop, products, or work
Step-by-step setup
- Go to google.com/business and sign in with your Gmail account.
- Type your business name. If it already appears in the list, select it and claim it. If not, create a new one.
- Choose your business category, such as "Bakery" or "Electrician". Pick the one that matches your main work most closely. This is the most important choice on the whole profile; our guide to Google Business Profile categories shows how to pick it.
- Add your address. If you work at customers' homes, choose the option to hide your address and list your service areas instead.
- Add your phone number and website, if you have one.
- Complete verification. Google needs to confirm the business is real.
How does Google verify a business?
Today, Google most often asks for a short video. You record your shop board, the street outside, and something that proves you run the business, such as unlocking the shutter or showing your billing counter. Some businesses are offered a phone call or text message instead. Google chooses the method, and review usually takes a few days.
Verification is the step where most owners get stuck. If your video is rejected, record it again in one continuous shot, in daylight, and make sure the shop name is clearly visible.
Five things that make your profile work better
- Fill in everything. Timings, services, description, and the year you started. Complete profiles are shown more often.
- Add real photos. At least ten: outside, inside, products, and your team. Add new ones every month.
- Ask happy customers for reviews. Google gives you a short review link. Share it on WhatsApp right after a good sale.
- Reply to every review. Thank people for good ones. Reply politely to bad ones. New customers read your replies.
- Keep your timings correct. Update them for festivals and holidays. A customer who arrives at a closed shop rarely returns.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Adding extra words to your name, such as "Best Cheap Mobile Shop Ahmedabad". Google can suspend the profile for this. Use your real name only.
- Creating a second profile because you forgot the old login. Duplicate listings confuse Google and customers. Recover the old one instead.
- Buying fake reviews. Google removes them, and may remove your listing too.
What to do after the profile is live
The profile is the first step, not the last. To climb into the top three on the map, follow our local SEO guide for small businesses: steady reviews, photos every month, the same details everywhere, and a simple website with your area on it.

Common questions
Is it really free to list my business on Google?
Yes. A Google Business Profile (earlier called Google My Business) costs nothing to create, verify, or keep. Google earns from ads, not from listings. Anyone who asks for money to "register your business on Google" is selling their own time or something you do not need.
How long does it take to appear on Google Maps?
Creating the profile takes about an hour. Verification, where Google confirms the business is real, usually takes a few days and sometimes up to two weeks. Once verified, the profile can appear on Maps within a day or two.
Can I list a home-based or service business without showing my address?
Yes. During setup choose the option that you deliver goods or services to customers, then hide your address and list the areas you serve. Tutors, electricians, caterers, and home bakers use this every day.
Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?
The most common reasons are extra words in the business name, an address that does not match the video or documents, a duplicate profile, or a category the business does not really offer. Fix the problem and ask for reinstatement from the profile dashboard.
Do I still need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?
Not on day one. The profile alone brings local calls. A simple website makes the profile rank higher, gives customers a place to see your full services and prices, and is what AI tools read when someone asks for a recommendation.
