What is GEO (generative engine optimization)? A simple guide

By Updated 4 min read

Short answer: GEO stands for generative engine optimization, also called AI search optimization. It is the work of making your business easy for AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity to understand and trust, so they name you when someone asks for a recommendation. It builds on normal SEO and adds a few extra steps.

People are changing how they search. Instead of typing "best physiotherapist Vadodara" into Google and opening five websites, many now ask ChatGPT or read Google's AI answer at the top of the page.

The AI reads many websites and replies with a short answer, often naming two or three businesses. GEO is how you become one of them.

What does GEO mean?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It means setting up your website and online presence so AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity can understand your business and mention it when people ask for recommendations.

Think of it like this:

  • SEO helps you show up in Google's list of links.
  • GEO helps you get named inside the AI's answer.

You need both, and the good news is that most of the work overlaps.

How does an AI decide which business to mention?

AI tools cannot visit your shop. They only know what they can read online. In general, they prefer businesses that are:

  1. Easy to understand. Your website says clearly what you do, where, and for whom.
  2. Consistent. Your name, address, and phone number are the same on your website, Google profile, and directories.
  3. Mentioned by others. Reviews, local news, directories, and other websites talk about you.
  4. Helpful. Your website answers real customer questions in clear language.

Six simple things you can do

1. Say clearly what you do, in the first lines

Write a plain sentence near the top of your home page: "We are a family dental clinic in Alkapuri, Vadodara, open Monday to Saturday." Clever slogans confuse AI tools and customers equally.

2. Add questions and answers

Add a "Common questions" section to each page. Write the question the way a customer would ask it, then answer it directly in two or three sentences. AI tools often quote this kind of text.

3. Keep your details the same everywhere

Use the exact same business name, address, and phone number on your website, Google Business Profile, Justdial, Facebook, and Instagram. Small differences make AI tools less sure that these are the same business. Our local SEO guide shows how to keep them consistent.

4. Collect genuine reviews

AI answers often lean on review content. A steady flow of real Google reviews that mention what you did ("fixed my AC the same day") helps a lot.

5. Add structured data

This is the technical part. Structured data is a small block of code that tells machines, in their own format, "this is a business, here is the address, these are the services and prices". Your web developer can add it, and visitors never see it.

6. Do not block AI tools

Some websites accidentally block AI crawlers in a settings file called robots.txt. If AI tools cannot read your site, they cannot recommend it. Ask your developer to check.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. AI tools mostly read the same web pages that Google ranks. A fast, clear, well-structured website with helpful content is the foundation for both. GEO adds a few extra steps on top.

Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my business?

No. Nobody controls what an AI says, and the answers change from day to day. What you can control is how clear, consistent, and trustworthy your business looks online. Businesses that do this well are mentioned more often.

Common questions

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO helps your website appear in Google’s list of links. GEO (generative engine optimization, also called AI search optimization) helps your business get named inside the answer that ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, or Perplexity write. Most of the work overlaps, and a site that does SEO well is most of the way to GEO.

How much does GEO cost for a small business?

If your website is already clear and fast, the extra work is small: a questions-and-answers section, structured data, consistent business details, and an llms.txt file. Done professionally in India it is usually part of an SEO setup costing ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 one-time, not a separate expense.

Do AI tools use Google reviews?

Yes, in practice. AI answers often lean on review text and on what other websites say about you. A steady flow of genuine Google reviews that mention the exact service you provided helps both Google Maps and AI recommendations.

Can I check whether ChatGPT recommends my business?

Ask it the way a customer would, for example "best dental clinic in Alkapuri, Vadodara", and see whether you are named and whether the details are right. Repeat monthly. The answers change, so treat it as a rough signal, not a ranking.

Is GEO worth it for a small local shop?

Yes, and it is cheap to do early. More customers ask AI assistants for recommendations every month, and most small businesses have not done anything about it yet. Being clear, consistent, and reviewed puts you ahead of them.
