Content creation for small business: a plan you can keep
By Darshana Patel10 min read
Short answer: Content creation for a small business means photos, short phone videos, Google posts, WhatsApp status updates, website pages and answers to customer questions. Post where the value is highest first: Google Business Profile, then WhatsApp, then Instagram, then your website and YouTube. Rotate four kinds of posts (show the work, answer a question, offer or news, people), keep it to about two hours a week, and end every post with a way to message you on WhatsApp.
"Content creation" is the phrase agencies use, and it makes owners feel they need a camera crew. You do not. For a shop, clinic, salon, restaurant or coaching class, content creation for small business is mostly what you already do every day, photographed on a phone and posted where customers look. This guide covers what content means, where it should go, the four kinds of posts, a weekly plan of about two hours, how to shoot and write, what content creation services charge in India, how to use AI tools safely, the common mistakes, and a 30-day starter calendar.
What does "content" mean for an owner?
Anything a customer can see or read about your business before they contact you:
- Photos of your work, your shop and your team
- Short videos, 15 to 60 seconds, shot on a phone
- Posts on your Google Business Profile
- WhatsApp status updates and broadcast messages
- Pages on your website, one per service
- Written answers to the questions customers ask every week
Not on the list: designed graphics, quotes of the day and festival greetings. They fill a feed and bring nobody in.
Where should the content go?
Channels are not equal for a local business. In order of value:
- Google Business Profile. This is where "near me" searches happen. Weekly posts, new photos and replies to reviews show up right where someone is choosing between you and the shop down the road.
- WhatsApp status and broadcast. Your existing customers already have your number. A status update is free, seen by people who already trust you, and brings repeat business.
- Instagram. Worth it if your customers choose by seeing: food, fashion, salons, decor, fitness, events. A clinic or a tuition class needs it less.
- Website pages and blog. One page per service and one answer post a month. This is what people read before they decide, and what Google and AI search quote.
- YouTube. One long answer video a month, if you can manage it. Slow to start, but a good answer works for years.
A dentist should put most of the two hours into Google and the website; a cake shop into Instagram and WhatsApp. Pick the top two for your business and keep the rest light.
The four buckets of posts
Every post falls into one of four buckets. Rotate them and you never run dry.
| Bucket | What it is | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Show the work | What you did today | A finished kitchen, a plated dish, a before-and-after hair colour, a student's result |
| Answer a question | Something customers ask every week | "How long does a root canal take?", "Do you deliver on Sundays?", "What is the fee for Class 10 maths?" |
| Offer or news | Something new or time-limited | New batch starting, Sunday brunch menu, a discount for the week, new timings |
| People and behind the counter | Who you are | The team, the workshop, how a day starts, why you started the business |
Most owners over-post offers and under-post the other three. A feed that is only discounts looks like a sale board; work, answers and people look like a business you can trust.
A weekly plan in about two hours
Batch the shooting and writing into one sitting, then post through the week.
| Day | What | Where | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | Shoot 10 photos and 3 short clips of the week's work | Phone | 30 minutes |
| Monday | Write captions for the week; schedule or save as drafts | Notes app | 45 minutes |
| Tuesday | Post "show the work" | Google Business Profile, Instagram | 5 minutes |
| Wednesday | Post "answer a question" | Instagram, WhatsApp status | 5 minutes |
| Thursday | Post "offer or news" | WhatsApp status and broadcast, Google post | 10 minutes |
| Saturday | Post "people and behind the counter" reel | Instagram, WhatsApp status | 5 minutes |
| Sunday | Reply to comments, messages and reviews; note next week's questions | All | 20 minutes |
Add one longer piece a month for the website, about two hours or outsourced, and the plan stays under ten hours a month.
How to shoot on a phone
- Light. Stand near a window or the shop entrance. Never shoot with a bright window behind the subject.
- Steady. Lean on a counter, or use a ₹300 to ₹800 phone tripod at the time of writing. Shaky video gets skipped.
- Vertical for reels and status, horizontal for the website. Shoot the important clips both ways if you can.
- 15 to 30 seconds. Longer needs editing; shorter does not.
- Wipe the lens. It fixes most blurry photos.
- Show a person. A hand doing the work, a face explaining. Empty rooms get less attention.
Captions that lead to a WhatsApp message
A caption has three jobs: say what the photo shows, answer the obvious question, and give the next step.
- First line: what it is. "Modular kitchen in a 2 BHK, finished in 18 days."
- Second line: the question people would ask. "This one came to about ₹2.4 lakh with the appliances."
- Last line: the next step. "Message us on WhatsApp for a free measurement: link in bio."
Keep the WhatsApp click-to-chat link in your Instagram bio, your Google profile and every website page. "WhatsApp us" beats "DM us", because the message lands where you actually reply.
Reuse one piece five ways
One finished job, photographed properly, becomes:
- A photo post on Google Business Profile
- A reel on Instagram with a caption about how long it took and what it cost
- A WhatsApp status the same evening
- A photo added to the matching service page on your website
- A line in next month's answer article ("What does a 2 BHK interior cost?")
Shoot once, post five times.
Content for the website and Google
Social posts disappear in a day. Website content keeps working, because it is what Google and AI search tools read when someone asks a question.
- One page per service. Not one "Services" page with a list, but a page each for root canal, braces and kids' dentistry, with what it involves, how long it takes, a price range and photos.
- One answer post a month. Take the most common question you were asked this month and answer it properly in 800 to 1,200 words with a clear short answer at the top.
- The AI search angle. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and similar tools quote pages that answer a question plainly and directly. A clear two-sentence answer near the top of a page is far more likely to be quoted than a page of adjectives. Our guide to what GEO and AI search mean explains this in plain words.
What do content creation services and freelancers charge in India?
Typical ranges at the time of writing. They vary with city and with whether the person shoots for you or only designs and writes.
| What | Freelancer, typical | Agency package, typical | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Social media post (design and caption) | ₹300 – ₹1,500 each | ₹5,000 – ₹15,000 a month for 12 – 20 posts | Cheapest when you supply the photos |
| Reel (shoot and edit) | ₹1,500 – ₹5,000 each | ₹10,000 – ₹30,000 a month for 8 – 12 reels | A shoot day is often charged separately |
| Blog article (800 – 1,500 words) | ₹1,500 – ₹6,000 each | ₹8,000 – ₹20,000 a month for 2 – 4 articles | Ask who checks facts and prices |

Using AI tools to draft, and why you must edit
AI writing tools are useful for a first draft of a caption, a service page or an answer post. But every draft needs your hand, for three reasons:
- They invent things. Awards, years of experience, "thousands of happy customers", statistics. Remove every claim you cannot back up.
- They are generic. Add your real prices, your area, your photos and the words your customers actually use.
- Medical, legal and financial content needs care. A clinic, a lawyer or a CA can get into real trouble with a confident wrong sentence. Have a qualified person read it before it goes live.
Treat the tool as a junior who writes fast and checks nothing.
Mistakes that waste the time
- Stock photos. Everyone can tell. One real photo of your counter beats ten studio images of models.
- Posting daily for two weeks, then nothing. Two posts a week for a year beats a burst and a silence.
- No call to action. A nice photo with no "WhatsApp us" leaves the reader with nothing to do.
- Copying competitors. Their posts may not be working either. Copy the format if you like, never the words or the photos.
- Ignoring replies. An unanswered comment or review is content too, and not the good kind.
A 30-day starter calendar
- Week 1: set up. Fill in the Google Business Profile completely, put the WhatsApp link in every bio, and shoot 30 photos and 10 clips in one afternoon. That is a month of material.
- Week 2: begin the rhythm. Two posts on Google, three on Instagram or WhatsApp status, one broadcast. Rotate the buckets.
- Week 3: add the website. Write or commission one service page and one answer post from this month's most common question.
- Week 4: measure. Count calls and messages from Google (in the profile insights), WhatsApp replies to status and broadcasts, and enquiries that mention a post. Keep what brought messages, drop what brought only likes.
What we charge
We write for Google and your website, not daily Instagram posts, and it is better to say that plainly.
Our Monthly Growth plan under SEO & GEO is ₹12,999 per month: two articles a month written to answer real customer questions, improvements to your existing pages, Google and AI visibility tracking, and a monthly report. Profile Care is ₹2,999 per month for your Google Business Profile: weekly posts, review replies, new photos, and a monthly report of calls, views and direction requests. Together they cover the two channels with the most value for a local business. No lock-in, everything in your name, and prices exclude GST. All packages are on the pricing page.
The short version
Content creation for a small business is photos, short phone videos, Google posts, WhatsApp updates and website pages, in that order of value for most local businesses. Rotate four kinds of posts: show the work, answer a question, offer or news, and people. Batch it into about two hours a week, shoot in window light on a phone, end every caption with a WhatsApp link, and reuse each finished job five ways. Add one service page and one answer post a month for Google and AI search, edit anything an AI tool drafts, and judge the month by messages and calls, not likes.
Common questions
What should a small business post?
Four kinds of posts cover almost everything: show the work (photos and short videos of what you did today), answer a question customers ask, an offer or news, and people and behind the counter. Rotate the four and you never run out of ideas.
How much time does content creation take for a small business?
About two hours a week if you batch it: 30 minutes shooting photos and clips on your phone, 45 minutes writing captions and posting, and a few minutes a day for WhatsApp status and Google posts. One longer piece a month for the website takes two more hours, or can be outsourced.
What do content creation services charge in India?
At the time of writing, freelancers typically charge ₹300 to ₹1,500 per social post, ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 per reel, and ₹1,500 to ₹6,000 per blog article. Monthly social media packages usually start around ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 for 12 to 20 posts. Prices depend on whether they shoot for you or only design.
Can I use AI tools to write my posts and articles?
Yes, to draft. Then edit every line: remove claims you cannot back up, add your real prices and photos, and be extra careful with medical, legal and financial statements. Google and AI search reward clear, specific, true answers, not generic text.
Where should a local business post first?
Google Business Profile first, because that is where people search for a shop near them. Then WhatsApp status and broadcast for existing customers, then Instagram if your customers choose by seeing, then website pages and YouTube for questions people research before deciding.
