Best SEO company in India: how to choose the right one
By Darshana Patel10 min read
Short answer: There is no single best SEO company in India. The right one depends on your business size, your city, and how crowded your market is. For a small local business, the best fit is usually a small agency or an experienced freelancer charging ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 one-time or ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 a month, who answers the ten questions below clearly, has a healthy Google presence of their own, and offers no lock-in.
Every "top 10 SEO companies in India" list you will find is either paid for, written by one of the companies on it, or copied from another list. None of them know your business. For a clinic, a coaching class, or a salon, the best SEO company in India is not the one with the biggest office. It is the one that can get your phone ringing for what you sell, at a price that makes sense for your margins, without locking you in. This guide replaces the list with a method: what to ask, what to check, how to read a proposal and a contract, and a scoring sheet to fill in after each call.
Why "best" depends on your business
SEO for a national e-commerce brand and SEO for a dental clinic are different jobs. One needs a content team, technical audits, and links across thousands of pages. The other needs a well set up Google Business Profile, a few clear service pages, and steady reviews. A company that is brilliant at the first is often a poor, expensive fit for the second.
| Your business | What SEO mostly means for you | Who usually fits |
|---|---|---|
| Local shop, clinic, salon, gym, coaching class, service provider | Google Maps ranking, service pages for your city, reviews, a fast mobile site | Small local agency or experienced freelancer |
| City-wide or state-wide business, multi-branch, B2B services | The above, plus regular content, location pages, some link outreach | Small to mid-size agency |
| E-commerce with hundreds of products, national brand, funded startup | Technical SEO at scale, content strategy, PR-style links, detailed tracking | Established agency with a team |
Decide which row you are in before you speak to anyone. Most disappointment we hear about comes from a row-one business hiring a row-three agency, or a "₹2,999 a month" service that fits no row.
The 10 questions to ask any SEO company
Ask these on the first call. You do not need to understand SEO to judge the answers, only to notice whether they are specific or vague.
| Question | A good answer sounds like | A bad answer sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Which searches will you target for my business, and why? | "Root canal cost in Surat, dentist near me, teeth cleaning Surat: these are what patients type." | "We will do 50 keywords." |
| 2. What will you change on my website in the first month? | A short list: titles, speed, service pages, Search Console, profile fixes. | "We will optimise everything." |
| 3. Who writes the content, and do I approve it? | "Our writer drafts it, you approve on WhatsApp before it goes live." | "Our team handles it," with silence about who or how. |
| 4. How do you handle my Google Business Profile? | "We fix categories, services, photos, and posts; you stay the owner." | "That is separate," or "we will create a new one." |
| 5. What will my monthly report show? | "Calls, WhatsApp messages, direction requests, enquiries, plus what we did." | "Ranking improvements and impressions." |
| 6. How long before I see something? | "Maps changes in weeks, new pages in two to three months, steady growth by six." | "Page one in 30 days." |
| 7. What happens if I stop after three months? | "You keep the site, the content, and all logins. Notice is one month." | "There is a 12-month contract." |
| 8. Who owns the website, domain, and accounts? | "You, always. We work as a manager on your accounts." | "We host it for you on our account." |
| 9. Have you worked with a business like mine? | An honest yes with what changed, or an honest no with why they can still help. | A screenshot of a rank tracker with no business name. |
| 10. What do you not do? | "We do not buy links, and we do not promise rankings." | "We do everything." |
Seven or more good-column answers: keep talking. Three or more bad-column answers: stop.
Check their own website and Google presence
An SEO company that cannot get itself found is telling you something. Spend fifteen minutes on this before any call:
- Search their company name on Google. They should have a Google Business Profile with real reviews, a website that appears first, and no angry reviews about missed deliverables or lock-in.
- Open their website on your phone. Does it load in a couple of seconds? If their own site is slow or confusing, yours will be too.
- Look for a blog or guides. A company that explains SEO in plain words for owners probably works that way with clients. No content of their own is a poor sign for a content service.
- Check the about page. Real names and faces, or stock photos and "a team of 50 experts"? Small and honest beats big and vague.
- Ask for a client's website, not a report. Open it, search in Google for one of that client's services, and see what appears. Numbers on a slide are easy to make; a live site is not.
How to read an SEO proposal
A proposal should be understandable without a dictionary. Look for:
- Named searches, not a keyword count. "Physiotherapist in Vadodara" is a target; "25 keywords" is a slogan.
- A month-by-month plan for the first three months with actual tasks: which pages, which fixes, which content.
- What is one-time and what is monthly, clearly separated; many proposals blur these.
- What is not included: ad budget, website changes beyond text, new pages beyond the quota, hosting.
- Reporting: what you receive, how often, and in what form. A WhatsApp summary you understand beats a 40-page PDF you never open.
- Exit terms on the same page as the price.
Strike out anything you do not understand and ask for it to be rewritten.
Pricing sanity check
Prices at the time of writing, across India, are roughly:
- One-time setup: usually ₹8,000 to ₹25,000. Covers technical fixes, titles, Search Console, sitemap, structured data, and a profile clean-up.
- Monthly, local business: usually ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 with a real person doing real work.
- Monthly, competitive or city-wide: usually ₹20,000 to ₹50,000.
- Below ₹5,000 a month: almost always automated reports and directory submissions.
Our post on SEO packages and pricing in India breaks down what each band actually includes. If a quote is far above these ranges, ask what extra work justifies it. If it is far below, ask who is doing the work.
Contract terms that protect you
Read these before you pay anything:
- No lock-in. A month's notice is fair. A six- or twelve-month contract with a penalty is not, whatever the discount.
- You own everything. Domain, hosting, website files, content, Google Business Profile, Search Console, and ad accounts stay in your name. The company is added as a manager only.
- Deliverables per month, written down. Number of pages improved, number of articles, profile posts, report date.
- Content is yours. Articles written for you remain yours if you leave.
- Payment monthly, not a year upfront.
If any of these is refused, that refusal is your answer.
Red flags
- Guaranteed rankings, page one in 30 days, or "we know someone at Google".
- Thousands of backlinks for a few thousand rupees. This gets sites penalised.
- Reports full of rankings and impressions but no calls, messages, or enquiries.
- Pressure to sign today because "the offer ends tonight".
- Cold calls or WhatsApp messages claiming your site "has 47 errors".
Small local agency vs big agency vs freelancer
| Small local agency | Big agency | Freelancer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical monthly fee (at the time of writing) | ₹8,000 – ₹25,000 | ₹40,000 – ₹2,00,000+ | ₹5,000 – ₹20,000 |
| Who does your work | The people you spoke to | A junior executive, after the sales team hands over | The person you spoke to |
| Attention to a small account | High; you are a meaningful client | Low; you are the smallest account | High, while they have capacity |
| Range of skills | SEO plus website, ads, profile, WhatsApp, usually in-house | Widest range, specialist teams | Depends on the individual; often one strong skill |
| Best for | Local businesses and small service companies | National brands, e-commerce, funded startups | Very small budgets, single well-defined tasks |
Match the type to the row you picked earlier.
A scoring sheet you can use
Give each line 0 (no), 1 (partly), or 2 (yes) for each company after the first call.
| Criteria | Score (0–2) |
|---|---|
| Named the actual searches my customers type | |
| Listed specific first-month changes to my site | |
| Content is written by a person and approved by me | |
| Report shows calls, messages, and enquiries | |
| Gave a realistic timeline (months, not days) | |
| No lock-in; one month's notice | |
| I own the domain, website, profile, and accounts | |
| Their own website and Google profile look healthy | |
| Showed a live client site, not just a slide | |
| Price is within the sane range for my business type | |
| Total (out of 20) |
In our experience, 16 or above is a company you can start with. 11 to 15 means ask more questions. Below 11, walk away however good the pitch felt. If you are a local business, our local SEO guide shows what actually moves the map results, so you can check the plan covers it.
What we charge
We are one of the small agencies in the table above, so judge us by the same sheet. Our SEO & GEO Setup is ₹17,999 one-time: a full website check-up report, titles and descriptions for up to ten pages, speed and mobile fixes, Google Search Console and sitemap setup, and structured data plus an llms.txt file so AI tools can read your site. Our Monthly Growth plan is ₹12,999 per month: two articles a month, ongoing page improvements, Google and AI visibility tracking, and a monthly report in plain words. No lock-in, and everything stays in your name.
We are a good fit for small local businesses and small service companies across India. We are not the right choice for large e-commerce sites or national brands that need a full content and link-building team; those businesses belong in the "big agency" column, and we will say so on the first call. Details are on the SEO & GEO service page and the pricing page.
The short version
Ignore "top 10" lists. Decide whether you are a local, city-wide, or national business, then ask every SEO company the same ten questions and score the answers. Insist on named searches, monthly deliverables, enquiry-based reports, no lock-in, and full ownership of your accounts. A fair price for a small business in India is ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 one-time or ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 a month, and the best company is the one that fits your row, not the one with the biggest office.
Common questions
Which is the best SEO company in India for a small business?
The one that has worked with businesses of your size, explains the work in plain words, and charges in the ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 a month range with no lock-in. Big agencies are built for national brands; a small local business gets more attention from a small agency or an experienced freelancer.
How much does an SEO company charge in India?
At the time of writing, a one-time setup is typically ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 and monthly SEO is ₹8,000 to ₹50,000 depending on how competitive the market is. Plans below ₹5,000 a month are usually automated reports. Always ask what exactly is done for the money each month.
Should I hire an SEO agency near me, or can it be done remotely?
SEO is done entirely online, so the company does not need to be in your city. What matters is that they understand local search in India and can explain their work to you over a call or WhatsApp. Being nearby only helps if you prefer face-to-face meetings.
What questions should I ask an SEO company before hiring?
Ask which searches they will target and why, what they will change on your site in month one, who writes the content, what the monthly report shows, what you keep if you stop, and whether you own all accounts. Clear, specific answers are a good sign; vague promises about rankings are not.
How long should I give an SEO company before judging results?
Three months is fair for early signs such as more calls from Google Maps and new pages appearing in search. Six months is fair for steady growth. If after three months you cannot see what was changed on your site, that is a problem regardless of rankings.
