SEO kya hai? A plain guide for Indian business owners

By 9 min read

Short answer: SEO ka matlab hai Google par bina ads ke upar aana. In plain words, SEO (search engine optimisation) is the work that makes your website and Google Business Profile appear higher when people search for what you sell, without paying for each click. It is not instant, it is not a trick, and nobody can honestly guarantee the number one spot. For a small business in India it usually costs ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 one-time to set up, and ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 a month if someone works on it every month.

"SEO kya hai" gets searched thousands of times a month in India, and most answers are written for people who want a job in marketing. This one is for the owner who has been told "you need SEO" by a friend, an agency, or a cold caller and wants to know what it actually is, whether it is worth paying for, and how to tell a good SEO person from a bad one. It covers how Google decides, the four parts of SEO, what SEO is not, what it costs, and a ten-minute check you can do today.

SEO kya hai? (What is SEO?)

When someone types "dentist near me" or "CA for GST filing" into Google, Google has thousands of pages and profiles it could show. It picks a handful for the first screen. SEO is everything you do so that Google picks yours. That includes your website, your Google Business Profile on Maps, your reviews, and what other websites say about you.

The key word is "without paying per click". Ads put you at the top for as long as you pay. SEO earns the spot slowly and keeps it for free, which is why owners who do both usually find that SEO becomes the cheaper source of enquiries after the first year.

How does Google decide who appears higher?

Google does not publish its exact formula, but in plain words it is judging three things:

  1. Relevance. Does this page or profile clearly match what the person searched? A page titled "Root canal treatment in Andheri" is more relevant to that search than a home page that says "Welcome to our clinic".
  2. Trust. Do other people and other websites treat this business as real and good? Reviews, mentions, links from other sites, and consistent name, address and phone number all build trust.
  3. Experience. Does the page load fast on a phone, is it easy to read, and do people stay on it rather than bouncing back to Google?

Everything in SEO is a way of improving one of those three.

The four parts of SEO

Part What it is, in plain words Who usually does it Typical cost in India (at the time of writing)
Technical SEO Making the site fast, mobile-friendly, secure (the padlock), and easy for Google to read and index A developer or SEO person, once, then checked yearly ₹5,000 – ₹15,000 one-time as part of a setup
On-page SEO Page titles and descriptions, honest text, one page per service, headings that match what people search The owner can start; an SEO person does it properly ₹5,000 – ₹15,000 one-time; more if pages must be written
Local SEO Google Business Profile, reviews, area names on the site, same details everywhere The owner, with a monthly routine Free to do yourself; ₹2,000 – ₹5,000 a month if someone manages it
Off-page SEO Mentions and links from other websites: directories, suppliers, local news, associations An SEO person or agency, over months Included in monthly plans of ₹8,000+; costly and slow on its own

For a local shop, clinic or service, local SEO gives the fastest return, followed by on-page. Off-page matters most for businesses competing city-wide or nationally. Our local SEO guide walks through the local part step by step.

What SEO is not

Owners lose money because of what they were told SEO is. To be clear:

  • SEO is not ads. If someone says "we will put you on top of Google in a week", they mean Google Ads, and the ad budget is on top of their fee.
  • SEO is not instant. Changes take weeks to be noticed and months to move rankings.
  • SEO is not a trick. Stuffing keywords, buying links, or fake reviews can work for a month and then get you removed. Google has been catching these for years.
  • Nobody can guarantee number one. Google decides, not the agency. A "guaranteed ranking" usually means an easy keyword nobody searches for.
  • SEO is not just the website. For local searches your Google Business Profile often matters more than the site.

How long does SEO take?

Usually months. In our experience the pattern for a small Indian business looks like this:

  • Weeks 1 to 4: technical fixes and a completed Google profile start showing on the map and in "near me" searches.
  • Months 2 to 3: new service pages start appearing for specific searches.
  • Months 3 to 6: steady climb if reviews and content keep coming.
  • After 6 months: each new page adds to the total, and enquiries come without ad spend.

A brand new website starts slower than one that has existed for years. Local businesses see results faster than national ones. Judge SEO over quarters, not weeks.

SEO kaise kare? Check your own SEO in 10 minutes

You do not need a tool. Do these three things on your phone:

  1. Search your business name. Your Google Business Profile should appear on the right or at the top with correct timings, photos, reviews and a website link. If it does not, or the details are wrong, that is your first job.
  2. Search your service plus your area, for example "physiotherapist Satellite Ahmedabad" or "CBSE tuition Kothrud". Are you in the map's three results? On the first page at all? Note who is, and look at what their pages and profiles have that yours do not.
  3. Open Google Search Console. It is free. Add your website, and within a few days it will show you which searches bring people to your site, which pages Google has indexed, and any mobile or speed errors. If your site has never been added, Google may be ignoring half of it.

If step 1 fails, do local SEO first. If step 1 passes but step 2 fails, you need pages that name your services and area. If step 3 shows errors, you need technical fixes.

YouTube SEO kya hota hai? (What is YouTube SEO?)

The same idea, on YouTube: making your videos appear when people search there. For a business channel it comes down to three things. Put the search phrase in the title ("How to choose a wedding photographer in Surat"), write a description of three or four lines that says what the video covers and links to your website and WhatsApp, and use a clear thumbnail with large text. Videos that people watch to the end rank better, so answer the question in the first thirty seconds. YouTube SEO matters if you already make videos; if you do not, Google SEO comes first.

SEO and AI search (GEO)

More people now ask ChatGPT, Google's AI answers and similar tools "which is a good dentist in my area" instead of scrolling results. Those tools read the same websites and profiles Google does, so good SEO already helps. The extra work, called GEO (generative engine optimisation), is mainly clear text that says what you do in the first lines, questions and answers on your pages, structured data, and not blocking AI tools from reading your site. We explain it in plain words in what is GEO.

What SEO costs in India

Typical prices at the time of writing:

  • One-time setup for a small business site: ₹8,000 to ₹25,000. This fixes speed, mobile issues, titles, sitemap, Search Console and structured data.
  • Monthly work by a real person: ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 a month for technical checks, page text, two to four articles a month, and profile updates.
  • Automated packages at ₹3,000 to ₹7,000 a month: usually reports and directory submissions; in our experience they rarely move a local business.
  • Agencies at ₹20,000 to ₹50,000+ a month: for businesses competing across a city or state, or e-commerce.

Our post on SEO packages and pricing in India explains what each band includes and how to compare two quotes.

Questions to ask before you pay anyone

  1. What exactly will you change on my website and profile in the first month?
  2. Which searches are you trying to get me found for, and how many people search them?
  3. Will I get the logins for Search Console and Analytics in my own name?
  4. What does your monthly report show: rankings only, or calls, messages and directions?
  5. Do you write the articles, or is it automated?
  6. What happens when I stop? Is there a lock-in?
  7. Can I speak to a business you have worked with for six months or more?

Vague answers to any of these usually mean a vague result.

The short version

SEO is the work that makes your website and Google Business Profile appear higher when people search for what you sell, without paying per click. Google judges relevance, trust and experience, and the four parts of SEO (technical, on-page, local, off-page) each improve one of those. It is not ads, not instant, and not something anyone can guarantee. A small business in India typically pays ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 for a one-time setup and ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 a month for ongoing work, and should judge results over months. Start by searching your own name and your service plus area, and fix whatever is missing first.

Common questions

SEO ka matlab kya hai? (What does SEO mean?)

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. It is the work that makes your website and Google Business Profile appear higher in Google results when someone searches for what you sell, without paying for each click. For a shop or clinic it mostly means a complete Google profile, a fast mobile website with one page per service, and steady reviews.

Local SEO kya hai? (What is local SEO?)

Local SEO is the part of SEO that gets you into the map results and the “near me” searches in your area. It depends on your Google Business Profile, your reviews, the area names on your website and your details being the same everywhere. For most small Indian businesses it matters more than any other part of SEO.

How long does SEO take to show results?

Usually months, not days. In our experience, profile and technical fixes start showing within a few weeks, new service pages need two to three months, and steady growth comes after six months. Anyone promising the top spot in two weeks is either running ads or not telling the truth.

How much does SEO cost in India?

At the time of writing, a one-time SEO setup for a small business site typically costs ₹8,000 to ₹25,000, and ongoing monthly work from a real person usually costs ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 a month. Cheaper automated packages exist but rarely move a local business.

Can I do SEO myself?

The basics, yes. Completing your Google Business Profile, collecting reviews, writing honest page text with your area name, and checking Search Console once a month are all things an owner can do. The technical fixes and regular articles are where most owners bring in help.
