Google Business Profile categories: how to choose right
By Darshana Patel10 min read
Short answer: Google Business Profile categories tell Google what your business is, and they decide which searches show your listing on Maps. Pick one primary category that is the most specific match for your main business, then add only the secondary categories for things you genuinely offer. Look at the primary category of the top three competitors for your main search before choosing. Changing the primary category later is allowed, but it may trigger re-verification and rankings usually shift for a week or two afterwards.
Most owners set the category once, during setup, in about four seconds. It is the choice that matters most for whether you appear when someone nearby searches, and it is the one most often set wrong. This guide explains how Google Business Profile categories work, how to pick the primary one, how many secondary ones to add, Indian examples, common mistakes, and what happens when you change a category. If you have not created your profile yet, start with our step-by-step guide to getting your shop on Google Maps and come back here for this one step.
What do categories actually do?
When someone searches "dentist near me", Google does not read your description and guess. It looks at which businesses nearby have a category matching "dentist", then ranks those by distance, reviews, and how complete the profile is. If your category says "Medical clinic", you may not appear for that search at all, even if you are the best dentist on the street.
There are two kinds of categories:
- Primary category. One only. It is the main thing your business is. Google gives it the most weight, and it is the category shown under your name on Maps.
- Secondary categories (Google calls them "additional categories"). Up to nine. They tell Google about the other things you offer, so you can appear for those searches too, with less weight than the primary.
Google has a fixed list of a few thousand categories. You cannot create your own; you search the list and choose from what appears.
How to choose your primary category
1. Describe your main business in one or two words
Not what you sell today, and not everything you do. What you are. "Bakery", not "Bakery and cafe and party orders". If you cannot decide, ask: what brings in most of my income, and what would a customer call me?
2. Type it into the category box and pick the most specific match
Inside your profile, go to Edit profile, then Business category, and start typing. Google shows matching categories as you type. Pick the most specific one that is still true. "Orthodontist" beats "Dentist" if you mainly do braces. "Dentist" beats "Medical clinic" if you are a general dental practice. "Cake shop" beats "Bakery" if cakes are all you make.
3. Check what the top three competitors use
Search your main service plus your area on Google Maps ("physiotherapist Andheri"). Open each of the top three listings. The primary category is shown under the business name. If all three use the same category and you use something different, you are probably competing in the wrong list. Match them unless you have a good reason not to.
How many secondary categories should you add?
Only the ones you really offer, and that customers would search for separately. In our experience two to five is the normal range. Ten is allowed but rarely sensible.
A good test for each secondary category: would a customer be happy if they arrived expecting exactly that? A restaurant that does home delivery can fairly add "Delivery Restaurant". A restaurant with one cake in the fridge should not add "Bakery".
Extra categories are not free. Every one you add tells Google you are less of your primary thing, and can pull in enquiries for things you do not do.
Common Indian businesses and the categories to look for
The names below are ones we are confident exist in the category box at the time of writing. Where we are not certain of the exact wording, we say "search for it", because names change and the only reliable list is the box inside your profile.
| Your business | Primary category to look for | Secondary categories worth checking | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kirana or general store | "Grocery store" | "Convenience store", "Supermarket" if large | Do not add "Supermarket" for a small shop; customers expect trolleys |
| Restaurant | "Restaurant", or a cuisine-specific one such as "South Indian restaurant", "North Indian restaurant", "Chinese restaurant" | "Delivery Restaurant", "Family restaurant", "Vegetarian restaurant" | The cuisine-specific category is usually the better primary |
| Cafe | "Cafe" or "Coffee shop" | "Bakery" only if you bake; "Tea house" if tea is the focus | "Cafe" and "Coffee shop" are separate; check which the top competitors use |
| Bakery or cake shop | "Bakery" or "Cake shop" | "Dessert shop", "Pastry shop" | Pick "Cake shop" if custom cakes are the main business |
| Dental clinic | "Dentist" or "Dental clinic" | "Orthodontist", "Pediatric dentist", "Dental implants provider" only if you do them | Both exist; look at your top competitors and match |
| General doctor's clinic | "Medical clinic", or the specialty ("Pediatrician", "Gynecologist", "Dermatologist") | "General practitioner" | Doctors with their own name on the board can use the specialty as primary |
| Physiotherapy | "Physiotherapy center" or "Physical therapist" | "Sports injury clinic" if relevant | Both wordings appear; check which suggests first |
| Ladies' beauty parlour | "Beauty salon" | "Hair salon", "Bridal makeup artist", "Waxing hair removal service" | "Beauty parlour" is not a separate category; search "beauty" |
| Unisex or men's salon | "Hair salon" or "Barber shop" | "Beauty salon" if you offer facials and skincare | "Barber shop" is more specific for men's cutting and shaving |
| Spa | "Spa" or "Day spa" | "Massage spa", "Massage therapist" | Do not add spa categories to a salon unless you have a spa room |
| Coaching centre | "Coaching center" | "Tutoring service", plus subject-specific ones like "Math tutor" if offered | American spelling "center" is what Google uses |
| Gym | "Gym" or "Fitness center" | "Personal trainer", "Yoga studio" if you run classes | "Gym" is the more searched term |
| Real estate agent or property dealer | "Real estate agency" | "Real estate consultant", "Property management company" if you manage rentals | "Property dealer" is not a category; search "real estate" |
| Electrician, plumber, AC repair | "Electrician", "Plumber", "Air conditioning repair service" | The other trades only if you truly do them | Service-area businesses; list the areas you cover |
| Mobile repair shop | "Mobile phone repair shop" | "Cell phone store" if you also sell | Do not add "Electronics store" unless you stock electronics |
| Clothing shop | "Clothing store", or specific ones like "Women's clothing store", "Saree shop", "Boutique" | "Tailor" if you alter | "Saree shop" exists; confirm spelling in the box |
If your business is not here, type the plainest English word for it into the box and read every suggestion before choosing.
Mistakes we see every week
- Choosing "Business service", "Store", or another general category. Nobody searches "business service near me". Replace it with the specific thing you do.
- Stuffing keywords into the business name. "Sharma Dental Clinic Best Dentist Borivali" is against Google's rules and can get the profile suspended. The category does the job of the keyword; the name should be your real name.
- Adding categories for things you do not offer. A salon adding "Spa", a kirana adding "Supermarket", a coaching centre adding "School". These bring wrong enquiries, and Google can treat the profile as less trustworthy.
- Choosing the category that sounds biggest. "Hospital" for a two-room clinic. Customers who arrive expecting the bigger thing leave bad reviews.
- Never revisiting it. A business that started as a cake shop and became a full cafe still says "Cake shop" three years later.
- Leaving it to whoever set up the profile. Agencies sometimes choose fast. Check it yourself; it takes one minute.
How to change categories, and what happens after
- Sign in to the Google account that manages the profile. On desktop, search your business name on Google and use the management panel that appears; on the phone, use the Google Maps app and open "Your business profile".
- Choose Edit profile, then Business information, then Business category.
- Change the primary category, or add and remove additional categories, then save.
What to expect afterwards:
- Review. Google may mark the edit as pending for a few hours to a few days while it checks the change.
- Re-verification. Changing the primary category, especially to something quite different, can trigger a request to verify the business again, usually by video. It is not a punishment; Google is checking that the business really is what you now say it is.
- Ranking movement. For a week or two after a change, your position on Maps can move up or down while Google re-assesses you against a different set of competitors. Do not change it back in a panic; give it three or four weeks.
- Do not change it often. Decide carefully, change once, and wait.
How to check which categories competitors use
Open their listing on Google Maps; the primary category is shown directly under the name. Secondary categories are not shown publicly, and you do not need them: the primary is what you copy from. Note the primary category of the top three results for your two or three most important searches. If they agree, that is your answer. If they differ, choose the most specific one that is true for you.
Categories are one of several things that decide your Maps position. Our local SEO guide for small businesses in India covers the rest: reviews, photos, your website, and consistent listings.

The short version
Google Business Profile categories decide which searches your listing can appear for. Choose one primary category that is the most specific true description of your main business, check it against the top three competitors on Maps, and add only the secondary categories for things you genuinely offer, usually two to five. Avoid general categories, never put keywords in your name, and do not add categories to look bigger. You can change categories at any time; expect a short review, possibly re-verification, and a couple of weeks of movement before things settle.
Common questions
What is the primary category in Google Business Profile?
The primary category is the one line that tells Google what your business mainly is, such as "Dental clinic" or "Bakery". It carries the most weight in deciding which searches show your business on Maps. You get one primary category and can add up to nine more as secondary categories.
How many categories should I add to my Google Business Profile?
Add only the categories for things you really offer, usually one primary and two to five secondary. Google allows up to ten in total, but adding categories you do not offer confuses Google about what you are and can lead to fewer good enquiries, not more.
Can I change my Google Business Profile category later?
Yes. Open your profile, edit the business information, and change the primary or secondary categories. Google may review the change, and changing the primary category can sometimes trigger re-verification. Rankings often move for a week or two after a change while Google re-assesses the profile.
How do I see which category my competitors use?
Search for your service on Google Maps, open a competitor’s listing, and look under the business name; the primary category is shown there. Secondary categories are not shown on the listing, but the primary category of the top three results tells you what Google rewards for that search.
Is there a Google My Business categories list I can download?
Google does not publish an official downloadable list, and the names change. The reliable method is to type a word into the category box inside your profile and read the suggestions. Third-party lists exist online but are often out of date, so confirm the name in the category box before relying on it.
