Local SEO for dentists and clinics: a practical guide
By Darshana Patel10 min read
Short answer: Local SEO for dentists and clinics is the work that puts you in the Google map results when someone nearby searches "dentist near me" or "root canal cost". The order of work is: pick the exact category on your Google Business Profile, list every treatment with a starting price, collect reviews in a way that does not expose patient details, give each main treatment its own page on your website, and keep your name, address, and phone identical on Practo, Justdial, and Google. Done yourself it costs time; done for you it typically costs ₹4,000 to ₹13,000 one-time.
Almost every new patient who is not a referral starts on Google. They search for a treatment or a "near me" phrase, look at the three clinics on the map, read a few reviews, and message one. Local SEO for dentists, doctors, and clinics is how you become one of those three. This guide takes our general local SEO guide for small businesses and applies it to a clinic, where categories, reviews, and privacy all work a little differently. Nothing here needs a paid tool or a technical background.
Why local SEO works differently for a clinic
Three things set a clinic apart from a shop:
- Patients search by treatment, not just by business type. "Braces cost", "physiotherapy for knee pain", and "child dentist" are as common as "dentist near me". Your profile and website need to match those words.
- Privacy limits what you can do with reviews and content. You cannot post a patient's story the way a salon posts a haircut.
- Advertising rules apply. Doctor and dental councils restrict promotional language, so your profile and pages have to stay factual. Check the current rules with your own council before writing anything that sounds like an offer.
The good news is that most clinics do very little of this properly, so a complete, factual profile stands out fast.
Step 1: Choose the right Google Business Profile category
The primary category is the strongest ranking signal you control. Google offers several for medical businesses, and the choice matters:
| Your business | Best primary category | Useful secondary categories |
|---|---|---|
| Dental practice with one or more dentists | Dental clinic | Dentist, Orthodontist, Pediatric dentist, Dental implants provider |
| Single dentist listed as a practitioner | Dentist | Cosmetic dentist, Endodontist (as relevant) |
| General doctor's clinic | Medical clinic | General practitioner, Family practice physician |
| Physiotherapy centre | Physiotherapy center | Physical therapist, Sports medicine clinic |
| Skin clinic | Skin care clinic or Dermatologist | Hair removal service (if offered) |
| Eye clinic | Eye care center | Ophthalmologist, Optometrist |
| Child specialist | Pediatrician | Medical clinic |
Two rules. First, the primary category should be the most exact description of your main work, not the broadest. "Dental clinic" beats "Medical clinic" for a dental practice. Second, only add secondary categories for things you actually do. Adding "Dental implants provider" when you refer implants out brings the wrong patients and the wrong reviews. Category names in Google's list change from time to time, so pick the closest one available when you set up.
Step 2: Clinic profile and doctor profile: Google allows both
Owners often ask whether to make the profile in the clinic's name or the doctor's name. Google's rules allow both at the same address:
- The clinic profile (organisation): "Smile Dental Clinic", category Dental clinic, with the clinic's phone, timings, and all services.
- A practitioner profile for each doctor who sees patients: "Dr. Priya Shah", category Dentist, with the doctor's own qualifications and photo.
The two are linked by the address, and Google shows the one that best matches the search. A solo practice with one doctor usually needs only one profile, and it is usually better to make it the clinic, because the clinic name stays the same if a doctor joins or leaves. A practice with two or more doctors benefits from the clinic profile plus one practitioner profile each, because patients search for a doctor by name after a referral.
What not to do: create two profiles for the same doctor, or put "Dr. Shah Best Dentist" as the name. Google can suspend both.
Step 3: List every treatment as a service, with a price
In the profile's Services section, add each treatment as a separate item with a short description and a starting price or a range. "Root canal treatment, starting ₹3,500", "Scaling and polishing, ₹800 to ₹1,500", "Consultation ₹300". Clinics worry that competitors will see the prices. Patients see them too, and they message the clinic that answered instead of the one that said "call for price".
Group them under headings that match how patients talk: cleaning and check-ups, fillings and root canals, braces and aligners, children's dentistry.
Step 4: A review strategy that respects patient privacy
Reviews are the biggest trust factor for a clinic and the easiest place to slip on privacy. The approach that works:
- Ask at the right moment: after a follow-up visit or when the patient says they are happy, not while they are in the chair.
- Make it one tap: a review link in the WhatsApp thank-you message and a QR code at reception.
- Ask for the treatment name, not the diagnosis: "It helps if you mention what you came for, like cleaning or braces." That gives Google the treatment words without exposing anything sensitive.
- Reply to every review within a day or two, and never confirm or discuss the patient's condition in your reply, even if they mention it themselves. "Thank you for visiting us, wishing you good health" is enough.
- Handle a bad review calmly: apologise for the experience, invite them to call, and do not argue medical details in public.
- Never buy or fake reviews. Google removes them and can suspend the profile, and it may also breach your council's rules.
Two or three genuine reviews a month, steadily, is enough to move up the map in most areas.
Step 5: Treatment pages that answer the cost question
Patients search "root canal cost", "braces cost in Pune", "physiotherapy charges", and most clinic websites have nothing that answers them. One page per main treatment, each with the cost range, what the treatment involves, and the questions patients ask, is the biggest website win available to a clinic. Our guide to building a website for a clinic describes each treatment page in detail.
Write the price as a range and label it: "At our clinic, braces typically cost ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 depending on the type." It ranks, it filters out people who cannot afford it, and it is honest.
Step 6: Area pages if you serve more than one locality
If patients come from three or four neighbouring areas, add a short page for each: "Dentist for Bopal and South Bopal", with the real travel time, a landmark, and which treatments those patients usually come for. Do not copy-paste the same page with the area name changed. One clinic in one area does not need these; the home page with the area in its title does the job.
Step 7: Keep Practo, Justdial, and your website consistent
Google checks whether your details match across the internet. For a clinic, the places that matter are:
- Google Business Profile and your website
- Practo, Lybrate, or any doctor listing you are on
- Justdial and Sulekha
- Facebook and Instagram
The clinic name, address (same spelling and format), phone number, and timings must be identical everywhere. An old number on Practo makes Google less sure you are one business. Fix it once in an afternoon, then check again every six months.
Step 8: Photos and FAQs on the profile
Add real photos: the front of the clinic with the board, reception, the treatment room, the sterilisation setup, and the doctor at work with no patient visible. Ten to twenty photos to begin with, then a few new ones each month. The Q&A section on the profile also lets you post questions and answer them yourself: "Do you accept cashless insurance?", "Is there parking?", "Do you treat children?" Fill five or six so patients see the answers before they call.
Step 9: Track it once a month
Two free tools:
- Profile insights inside Google Business Profile: how many people saw the profile, called, messaged, or asked for directions, and which searches led to you.
- Google Search Console for the website: which searches show your pages and their position.
Look once a month. If "braces" appears in searches but you have no braces page, write one. If direction requests are rising, the map work is paying off.
The top 10 actions, and the time each takes

The short version
Local SEO for dentists and clinics comes down to a complete Google Business Profile with the exact category, every treatment listed with a starting price, a steady flow of real reviews collected and answered without revealing patient details, one website page per main treatment with a cost range, and identical details on Practo, Justdial, and your site. Add photos and a post each week, check the numbers monthly, and expect four to six months to reach the map for your main treatment.
Common questions
Should my Google Business Profile category be Dentist or Dental clinic?
Use Dental clinic as the primary category for the practice profile and Dentist for an individual doctor profile. The primary category should be the most exact description of your main work, and secondary categories such as Orthodontist or Pediatric dentist should only be added for treatments you actually provide.
Can the clinic and the doctor both have a Google Business Profile?
Yes. Google allows an organisation profile for the clinic and a separate practitioner profile for each doctor who sees patients at the same address. A solo practice usually needs only the clinic profile. Do not create two profiles for the same doctor or add words like best to the name.
How do I ask patients for Google reviews without breaking privacy?
Send a review link in your WhatsApp thank-you message and ask them to mention the treatment name, not their condition. When you reply, thank them without confirming or discussing anything medical. Never post a review on their behalf, and never buy reviews.
How long does local SEO take for a dental clinic?
Profile changes show within days, reviews and photos lift you over a few weeks, and treatment pages take two to three months to settle. In our experience a clinic that follows the ten actions steadily is usually in the map results for its main treatment in its own area within four to six months.
How much does local SEO cost for a clinic in India?
Doing it yourself costs time only. Getting the Google profile set up professionally typically costs ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 one-time, and the website side ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 one-time. Ongoing care with posts, review replies and new pages usually runs ₹3,000 to ₹10,000 a month.
