App development cost in India: do you even need an app?
By Darshana Patel10 min read
Short answer: App development cost in India at the time of writing is typically ₹30,000 to ₹1 lakh for a simple app from a freelancer, usually ₹1.5 lakh to ₹6 lakh for a small business app with login, payments and an admin panel, and well above ₹10 lakh for a marketplace or delivery app. Keep aside roughly 15 to 25 percent of the build cost every year for store fees, servers and updates. Most small businesses asking this question do not need an app at all; a mobile-friendly website plus WhatsApp does the same job for under ₹35,000.
Let us be honest from the first line: KarmaSoftech does not build mobile apps, and in our experience most owners who search for app development cost in India do not need one. They need customers to find them on a phone, see what they offer, and message or call in one tap. A mobile-friendly website and a WhatsApp number do that. Still, it is a fair question and the quotes you get will be all over the place, so this guide covers what drives the cost, typical prices at the time of writing, the yearly costs nobody mentions, a five-question test, the cheaper alternatives, and how to hire a developer if you really do.
What decides the cost of an app
An app is priced by the work inside it, not by the idea. These are the parts that move the bill.
Android, iOS or both
Android alone is the cheapest and reaches most Indian customers. Adding iPhone users means either a second build or a cross-platform tool (Flutter and React Native are the common ones) that shares one code base. Cross-platform usually costs less than two separate apps but more than Android alone.
Number of screens and features
Each screen is designed, built and tested. A five-screen app that shows your services and opens WhatsApp is a small job. A thirty-screen app with a cart, order history, ratings and chat is not. Ask for a screen list before a price; without one the quote is a guess.
Login, payments and admin panel
Three features quietly double the cost:
- Login (phone OTP, Google, email) means storing user data safely and handling forgotten passwords and blocked numbers.
- Payments means a payment gateway, refunds, failed-payment handling and receipts.
- An admin panel is a second product: the website where you or your staff add items, see orders and change prices. Owners forget this one and are surprised when it is quoted separately.
Backend and hosting
Anything that changes (menus, prices, bookings, users) lives on a server, not in the app. Building and hosting it is often a third or more of the total.
Design
A design people understand without a tutorial takes a designer, not just a coder. Cheap apps skip this and it shows in the reviews.
Maintenance
Android and iOS change every year and old apps start crashing or get removed from the stores. Someone has to keep it working. More on this below.
Typical app development cost in India
These are the bands we see quoted to small businesses at the time of writing. Your feature list, city and the developer's experience move you inside them.
| App type | What it does | Typical cost in India | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple showcase app | Services, gallery, contact, WhatsApp button, no login | ₹30,000 – ₹1 lakh (freelancer) | 2 – 6 weeks |
| Booking or ordering app | Login, catalogue, booking or order flow, notifications, basic admin panel | ₹1.5 lakh – ₹4 lakh | 2 – 4 months |
| Shop app with payments | Cart, online payment, order tracking, offers, full admin panel | ₹3 lakh – ₹8 lakh | 3 – 6 months |
| Marketplace or delivery app | Many sellers or riders, live tracking, commissions, separate apps for each side | ₹10 lakh – ₹40 lakh and up | 6 – 12 months |
A few things to read from that table:
- "Android app development cost" and "app making cost" quotes below ₹30,000 are usually a template with your logo on it, or a wrapper around a website. That can be fine, but know what you are buying.
- An app development company costs more than a freelancer for the same feature list, usually two to three times more, because you also pay for a project manager, a designer and a tester. In return you get a written scope and someone to call when it breaks.
- The first quote is rarely the final bill. Changes during the build, the admin panel and testing on different phones are often billed as extras.
The yearly costs people forget
An app is not a one-time purchase. After launch you pay for:
- Store accounts. Google charges a one-time fee for a Play Store developer account and Apple a yearly fee for the App Store, both in dollars at the time of writing. Small, but they must be in your name.
- Server and database hosting. Usually a few hundred to a few thousand rupees a month for a small app, more as users grow.
- Updates when phones change. New Android and iOS versions break things every year. If nobody fixes them, the app crashes for new phones and can be delisted.
- Bug fixes and small changes. New price list, new branch, new offer banner. Each one is developer time.
- Payment gateway charges on every transaction if the app takes money.
- SMS or OTP charges, which are per message.
In our experience a sensible yearly reserve is 15 to 25 percent of the build cost. An app that cost ₹3 lakh to build usually needs ₹45,000 to ₹75,000 a year to stay alive, which is why many small business apps quietly die after the first year.
Do you need an app? Five questions
Answer these honestly before you take a single quote.
- Do customers come back every week? A tiffin service, a gym, a tuition class: maybe. A salon, a clinic, a furniture shop, a real estate agent: no. Nobody installs an app for something they do twice a year.
- Do they need something only an app can do? Offline use, push notifications, the camera, GPS tracking, or a payment they make every day. If the answer is "they need to see my prices and message me", a website does that.
- Would they actually install it? Phone storage is full and people delete apps every week. Ask ten regular customers. Most owners get an honest no.
- Can WhatsApp or a website do the same? Menus, catalogues, bookings, order confirmations, reminders and payments all work on WhatsApp today. A booking form on a website works on every phone without installing anything.
- Can you afford the updates? Not the build, the yearly reserve above, for years. If that number makes you wince, stop here.
If you answered no to two or more, you do not need an app. You need the alternatives below.
What does the same job for less
- A mobile-first website. Opens in one tap from Google, WhatsApp or Instagram, no installation, works on every phone. Services, prices, gallery, map, call and WhatsApp buttons. Our post on website development cost in India covers what a good one costs and why quotes vary.
- A PWA, or "add to home screen". A website built so a customer can save it as an icon on their phone and it opens like an app, without any store. It gives you most of the app feel for website money.
- WhatsApp catalogue and order flow. The free WhatsApp Business app gives you a product catalogue, quick replies, labels and a click-to-chat link. The official API adds menus, automatic order or appointment flows, reminders and broadcasts. See our comparison of the best WhatsApp automation tools in India.
- Google Business Profile booking. Salons, clinics and classes can take bookings from Google Search and Maps through a booking partner, with no app.
- Marketplace apps that already exist. Restaurants use the delivery apps, shops sell on the big marketplaces. You pay commission, but the app, the users and the updates are their problem.
For most local businesses, a website plus WhatsApp automation costs a fraction of a basic app and needs nothing beyond hosting to maintain.
When an app truly makes sense
Some businesses genuinely need one:
- A delivery fleet. Riders need GPS, live orders and proof of delivery. That is an app.
- Subscription content. Daily lessons, workouts or videos that people open every morning, with a paid plan.
- Gyms and studios with class booking at scale. Hundreds of members booking, cancelling and checking in daily.
- Loyalty at scale. A chain of cafes or stores where points, offers and wallet balance drive repeat visits across many outlets.
- Anything that must work offline or in the field: technicians, surveyors, field sales.
Even here, many owners start with a website and WhatsApp and build the app later around proven customer behaviour.
How to hire an app developer if you do need one
- Write the scope first. A screen list, a feature list, which platforms, and what the admin panel must do. Send the same document to every developer so quotes are comparable.
- Insist on a fixed price for a fixed scope, with a written list of what counts as a change and how changes are billed.
- Pay by milestone, not upfront: design approved, first working build, testing done, live on the stores.
- Everything in your name. The Play Store and App Store accounts, the server, the domain, the payment gateway and the source code. A developer who wants to publish under their own account is a red flag.
- Get the source code and a handover document at every milestone, so a second developer can take over if needed.
- Ask for one month of free bug fixes after launch and a monthly maintenance price in writing.
- Test on cheap Android phones, because that is where your customers are.

The short version
App development cost in India at the time of writing is typically ₹30,000 to ₹1 lakh for a simple freelancer-built app, ₹1.5 lakh to ₹6 lakh for a small business app with login, payments and an admin panel, and ₹10 lakh and up for a marketplace or delivery app, plus 15 to 25 percent of that every year to keep it alive. Before you spend it, ask whether customers come back weekly, need something only an app can do, and would install it. For most shops, clinics, salons and service businesses the answer is no, and a mobile-first website with WhatsApp automation does the job for under ₹35,000. If you do need an app, fix the scope, pay by milestone, and keep the code and accounts in your own name.
Common questions
How much does it cost to make an app in India?
At the time of writing, a simple app from a freelancer usually costs in the tens of thousands of rupees, a small business app with login, payments and an admin panel is usually in the low to mid lakhs, and marketplace or delivery apps cost much more. Add yearly costs for store fees, servers and updates on top.
Does my small business need a mobile app?
Usually not. Most shop, clinic and salon customers will not install an app they use once a month. A mobile-friendly website with WhatsApp and call buttons does the same job for a fraction of the cost. An app makes sense when customers come back every week and need notifications, GPS, camera or offline use.
Is Android app development cheaper than iOS?
Building for one platform is cheaper than building for two. Most small business customers in India are on Android, so many owners start there. Adding iOS usually raises the price a lot unless the developer uses a cross-platform tool that shares one code base for both.
What are the yearly costs of running an app?
Developer accounts for the Play Store and App Store, a server for the backend, bug fixes when phones update, and small changes. In our experience owners should keep aside roughly 15 to 25 percent of the build cost every year, and more if the app handles payments or has many users.
Does KarmaSoftech build mobile apps?
No. We build mobile-first business websites and set up WhatsApp automation, which is what most small businesses asking about apps actually need. If you truly need an app, this post explains how to hire a developer safely and keep the source code and accounts in your own name.
